Restaurant owner Tips

What is good to keep in mind as a restaurant owner?

If you’re a business owner or manager in hospitality, there’s no escaping public attention, so don’t give away the advantage by stumbling or not being prepared. Be ready to use the most flexible and reliable of your marketing assets – you!

1.’Business is great’.

Period. Nothing is more boring than business owners or managers complaining about how hard life is. No-one cares. Even if it’s slow, tell us about one of your clever staff, interest customers with new menu changes you’re excited about. You may have to ‘fake it to make it’!

2. Support a cause or charity.

The local soccer team is always a great idea but go beyond to other groups that may be more inspirational and engage people more effectively. Child sponsorship through a charity group or overseas aid and environmental work is something that you and your staff can watch develop and feel proud of. Make your support known, but modestly.

3. Have something on paper to give away.

A page of your top recipes, your top 10 tips for throwing a party, food & wine information sheets for customers who want advice on areas are a great way to add personality to a business.

4. Check the friendliness and quality of your communication.

Unfriendly voicemail or staff messages can sabotage your image. Ensure emails are correctly punctuated and have no spelling mistakes as this will make you look uneducated.

5. Dress for success.

It’s not about labels, but people assume you have a great life. Wear modern clothes and shoes, certainly beyond the standard of your staff. Decent glasses, a good haircut, and gentlemen, ensure you have a shaved face or clean beard. Signature items like earrings or a tie can create a memorable effect. Having a bright smile on show with clean teeth and immaculate uniforms show great professionalism and band recognition.
