Examples of Sales Promotions

When advertising your restaurant, there are many types of offers that you can use to promote your business.

It is easy to try many different types of discounts, 5 % / 10% / 20% discounts, buy one get one free, free dessert, free drink, etc. and there are so many options that can be thought of to use as a way to attract new customers and have existing ones keep returning.

However by mixing up the different types of promotions, makes it much harder to work out what is the most effective campaign to use. It is only when you are able to compare the same offer using different advertising media, that you are able to see the effectiveness of the promotion.

When I was promoting my restaurant, I did two different offers with similar marketing companies – both were shopping vouchers but one was for the Coles and Bi Lo supermarkets which the offer was ‘buy one get one free’ and the other offer was with Woolworths using ‘20% discount off meals’.

The Coles offer got far more results, but because the offer was different, they couldn’t be compared. So by discontinuing with the Woolworths because of lack of redemptions, I never really knew whether it was actually the offer that was not attractive, or that type of promotion was not effective.

This is why it is so important to make sure that the offer you are promoting is one that actually works and gets more people into your store, and where you are using that offer is the right place for more customers to see your offer.

Successful restaurants have managed to get this right, and have a continual flow of customers that spend money in the business. They have a good offer, or something that is attractive to the people that follow them, and it is much cheaper in your advertising costs once you have this formula right.

Instagram is a popular social media app, and many restaurants are posting beautiful photos of their food or stuff about their venue. When you have built up a following, then tempting images makes people hungry and they then want to come to eat these items.
These images are an offer, a visual offer, of what is available on the menu, and is used to get your tastebuds watering, and is a very effective offer, especially when these items are only available for a limited time.

So make sure that you know who your customers are, where they are getting information about your restaurant, and what type of offer or promotion is attractive to them and their friends.

If you are not sure where to start, the easiest way is to ask your customers, or see what your direct competition are doing to promote their business.

Take notice of what looks good and use the feedback that you get, and build a campaign around the information that you receive. Once you have started, then you can start comparing places that you use to promote. Or have two different types of promotion in the advertising place that you know gets results, so you can then test your offer.

Once you have got the right offer and the good places to promote your business, it is very important to start tracking and analysing your results to see their effectiveness.
